LHC takes notice of Multan acid attack

The Lahore High Court (LHC) took notice of acid attack on a woman and her daughters after they resisted a rape attempt in Multan District on Saturday.

The court directed District & Sessions Judge concerned to probe into matter and submit a detailed report regarding steps taken by local police along with his own comments.

The notice was taken on a news item published in local newspaper according to which Ghulam Muhammad, resident of Naurangabad told police that his wife Azizan Bibi and two daughters were sleeping when accused persons Altaf Baloch and Nazeer allegedly barged into the house and tried to rape the girls.

As Azizan Bibi and her daughters resisted, they threw acid on victims and ran away. The victims were shifted to Nishtar Hospital where Azizan and her daughter were in critical condition. The other girl, who suffered minor burns, was sent home after first aid. However, police registered the case and arrested one accused but other managed to flee.

Special benches

The Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial on Saturday constituted six special benches to hear cases of three regions from the week commencing on May 20 till further orders.

According to a roster issued by Additional Registrar Ashtar Abbas, two benches comprising honorable judges have been formed each for Gujranwala, Faisalabad and Sargodha divisions. Justice Rauf Ahmad Sheikh would deal with civil, Justice Muhammad Yawar Ali criminal matters filed by the people of Gujranwala division while civil and criminal matter falling in Faisalabad division would be taken up by Justice Mehmood Meqbool Bajwa and Justice Syed Muhammad Kazim Raza Shamsi respectively.–Staff Reporter
