6.4m gunny bags for wheat procurement

LAHORE - Senior Advisor to Chief Minister Punjab Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khan Khosa has said that the food department is distributing 64,62,543 gunny bags among the farmers in the province during the wheat procurement campaign 2009. In this connection, advisory committees comprising representatives of cultivators and elected members have also been constituted to ensure transparency in the procurement process. Talking to various delegations of farmers at his office on Sunday, Khosa said a target of purchasing 4 million tons of wheat had been fixed, that is why to ensure achievement of aim such a large number of gunny bags were being distributed in different districts of the province. He said 43,530 gunny bags were allocated for Gujranwala Division, 6,67,095 Lahore, 4,58,055 for Faisalabad, 1,86,477 for Sargodha, 11,54,142 for Multan, 13,28,786 for Dera Ghazi Khan and 26,24,428 for Bahawalpur Division. He said 389 centres had been set up for wheat procurement and committees had also been constituted for ensuring transparency in the process. For facilitating the farmers, purchase price of wheat as well as telephone numbers of complaints cells had also been displayed at the centres, he added. He said toll free complaint cells had been established at all the divisional headquarters while farmers could also contact the complaint cell set up at the Punjab Assembly at telephone No 042-9203282. Immediate notice and strict action would be ensured against the officials involved in corruption, he added. Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khan Khosa further told the farmers that due return was being ensured to the farmers of their produce, as such wheat price for 40 kg was determined at Rs 950. He said wheat procurement centres would continue to purchase wheat till the farmers brought their produce to the centres. He said growers were playing an important role for meeting the food requirements of the country and Punjab government was making efforts for providing maximum facilities to the them.
