MPAs enraged over caricatures

LAHORE - The Punjab Assembly on Tuesday unanimously passed a resolution condemning publication of imaginary caricatures and pictures of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions (Sahaba) in an Indian newspaper, and demanded of the federal government to lodge strong protest with the Indian Government. The resolution further asked the federal government to summon Indian High Commissioner in the foreign office to covey to him the utmost resentment of Pakistanis over the development. It also demanded strict disciplinary action against the newspaper, "The Hindustan Times" to prevent publication of such sketches in future. After start of assembly proceedings on Tuesday, a treasury member Sanaullah Masti Khail stood on a point of order and drew chair's attention towards publication of sketches in the said Indian paper, which, he said, had badly hurt the sentiments of Muslims all over the world. He pleaded that House should pass a resolution to condemn this blasphemous act on the part of the publisher to give a strong message to the world that such acts would not be tolerated any more. Responding to Masti Khail's point of order, Law Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan suggested that House should move a joint resolution, also taking the Opposition on board. The Opposition agreed to it and the assembly unanimously adopted the resolution condemning the profane publication. THANKSGIVING PRAYER A treasury member Shaukat Mahmood Basra on a point of order asked the Speaker to make arrangements for offering of 'Thanksgiving prayers to thank God Almighty over exit of Pervez Musharraf from power. The chair asked him that he as well as other assembly members were free to offer thanksgiving prayers and no body would stop them. The Speaker insisted that he should do it on his own. Opposition member Amna Ulfat on a point of order said that following resignation by President Pervez Musharraf, the coalition government should remove all restrictions on Dr A Q Khan and make him country's president. She also complained of aerial firing out side her residence on Monday to harass her. Law minister Rana Sanaullah assured her that a case would be registered against the culprits. He also offered provision of security guards to the lady legislator for her safety if she so desired. Senior parliamentarian Sardar Zulifqar Ali Khan Khosa on a point of order said that special training sessions should be arranged for assembly members to acquaint them about assembly rules of procedures.  Khosa believed that this would save precious time of the House, which is wasted on irrelevant point of orders raised by the members. He also asked the Speaker to define rules in this regard.
