LAHORE The sanitary workers of Solid Waste Management (SWM) have rejected the conversion of Department into Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC). The workers on Monday protested the decision taken by the provincial government in this regard and chanted slogans against the administration of LWMC. Meanwhile, a meeting was held at the Jinnah Hall wherein LWMC Managing Director Waseem Ajmal Chaudhry tried to clear the misunderstandings of the SWM workers and officials about the newly-established company. But the workers got angry when the MD just discussed the past and did not talk about the future of workers and the new company. The MD informed the workers that the meeting was arranged on the directions of Chief Minister Punjab and aimed at addressing their grievances. He said that the SWM department was transformed into a company only for administrative purposes, adding that the workers would remain government employees and continue to receive their basic salaries and other benefits in case if they got selected with the company. He clarified that all the workers would be given two options - to remain an employee of the government or opt the company. He further said that those employees who would opt the company would get better advantages besides health facilities. Waste removing campaign to be launched Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) of City District Government Lahore will launch a grand waste removing operation across the City. Managing Director LWMC Wasim Ajmal disclosed this on Monday while addressing the sanitary workers and the other officials of the company. In this regard he issued directions to District Officer (Planning) Muhammad Rafique Jatoi to constitute teams comprising of efficient workers for such cleaning operation within a couple of days so that the campaign could be launched. Earlier, a number of special squads of LWMC removed about 360 tons of waste during a waste collecting operation in some union councils of Aziz Bhatti and Gulberg Towns including UC No 60, 61, 41 and 59 and UC 131 respectively.
