LAHORE - The Pakistan Cricket Board has finally decided to test young wicket-keeper Sarfarz Ahmed in place of experienced Kamran Akmal as a list of 20 probables for this month's Asia Cup was released on Thursday. The PCB selection committee Thursday announced the list for the camp training which would resume at Karachi and the final 15 will be announced on June 22. The Asia Cup involving Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, UAE and Hong Kong will be held at Karachi and Lahore from June 26 to July 6. Sri Lank are the defending champion of the Asia Cup -billed as an event that would show that Pakistan is safe for all kinds sports. Sarfraz is the only wicket-keeper in the list of probables and chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed said that Akmal was rested for the six-nation event. "We have given rest to Akmal as he has been playing for the last four to five years and he also needs improvement behind the stumps," he said. The decision came amid criticism of Akmal when he dropped the catch of Virender Sehwag during the league match of the Kitply Cup in Bangladesh. Akmal escaped any action for taking unclear catch. India won the match by 140 runs. When Sehwag was sent packing by the on-field umpires, match referee Martin Crowe after watching the catch on television replay declared him not out. Pakistan coach also declared that the catch was there and was also seen arguing with the fourth umpire. It was learnt the PCB quarters believe Akmal has reached over the hill in his career and during the Tri-nation Series in Bangladesh, which Pakistan won beating India in the final, was given opportunity to open the innings to consolidate his place in the team. But he did not utlise the opportunity and missed out on all the occasions. Akmal has been playing since 2004 when he replaced Moin Khan and during the course of time he played in 38 Tests and 88 one-day internationals. Akmal was dropped from the team after nearly a five hours meeting of the selection committee. Though the captain was backing Akmal's inclusion, selectors decided otherwise. "He has been given a number of chances and we need to prosper someone else to replace him," said a board official. But the chief selector dismissed suggestions that he was dropped and said: "He is being rested. He is our number one wicket-keeper but there should be someone at his back. He will prepare himself better to make a strong comeback." The selectors also included rookie off spinner Saeed Ajmal and gave another call to young all-rounder Mansoor Amjad and pacer Abdur Rauf. The indications were that these young players would be given a chance against the weaker opposition in the Asia Cup. The team: Shoaib Malik, Salman Butt, Younus Khan, Muhammad Yousuf, Misbahul Haq, Shahid Afridi, Fawad Alam, Sohail Tanveer, Sarfaraz Ahmad, Umar Gul, Rao Iftikhar, Sohail Khan, Wahab Riaz, Nasir Jamsheed, Yasir Hameed, Bazeed Khan, Nouman Ullah, Mansoor Amjad, Saeed Ajmal, and Abdul Rauf are among the probables. The training camp would get underway from June 22 in Karachi.
