LAHORE - Hundreds of students of Lahore University of Management Science (LUMS) staged a strong protest demonstration shortly after a rashly-driven luxury vehicle of a local businessmans son allegedly crushed a BSc student of the varsity to death and injured two others in Defence area early on Monday. Several roads of the Cantonment area remained blocked to traffic due to eight hours long uninterrupted agitation and sit-in by the students. Initially, the police was reluctant to lodge an FIR knowing that all the joy-riders belonged to wealthy and influential families. However, the protest by the students that continued for eight hours forced the police to register the FIR. According to some eye witnesses the joy-riders were performing screeching, a favourite sport among the upper class youth, when the car got out of control causing the accident that claimed the life of the young student. The deceased, Wohaib Alam (22) and his class fellows Majid Nawaz and Habib Tariq were going to a local market for breakfast on a car (LWR-9972) early morning on Monday at around 4:15am. As they reached near KFC (Defence), a Parado jeep coming from the opposite side turned turtle due to over speeding and rammed into their car after rolling for quite a distance, a DHA security official said. SP Cantt Ghulam Azfar said that the parado was being driven by a youth Bilal Sheikh, son of Sarfaraz Sheikh, a Garden Town resident and owner of flour mills while his friends Asad Sultan, son of an army officer, and Muhammad Danish, son of Abdul Sultan, a businessman, were other occupants of the jeep. On the claims of the agitating students that the parado riders were under the influence of drug, the police sent their blood samples to the laboratory for examination. SHO Defence said that according to doctors, the medical reports would be issued within three to four days. The terrible accident sparked protest among the LUMS students as no less than 600 students including females reached the spot and started agitation against the incident. A university student Salman who reached the spot after 10 minutes of the incident told this scribe that he found three varsity students lying in pool of blood on the road. He said one of the injured students later identified as Wohaib Alam had succumbed to injuries on the spot while the others were crying for help. Quoting a DHA security official, Salman said that he witnessed a rashly-driven parado jeep rolling on the road. Suddenly the jeep rammed into the car of the students and resultantly all the youngsters sitting inside the car sustained multiple injuries, he said. One of the jeep riders, Danish, also received minor injuries while the others two youngsters remained unhurt in the accident, he further said. The police, however, arrested Asad and Danish after the DHA security personnel immediately got hold of them while their other friend, Bilal Sheikh, fled from the scene leaving the jeep on the road. The police later seized the vehicle. The injured students were immediately shifted to the National Hospital Defence from where Majid was shifted to the Lahore General Hospital. They all three were residents of Multan and presently staying in the university hostels. Quoting the other injured student, Habib Tariq, a police investigator told this scribe that he saw the parado zigzagging on the road. As the driver applied brakes it turned turtle and collided with another vehicle. Majid said that he had witnessed such scenes only in English movies. Apparently it seemed that the jeep driver was under the influence of alcohol, he told the police officer. He further said that it was electric pole that saved their lives as it (electric pole) had reduced the speed of the parado. The news of Wohaibs death landed like a bombshell in his family when the university management informed them about the incident. Meanwhile, Defence police faced tough time from both the university students and the accused parties. Around 600 students continued agitation from early morning till noon demanding strict legal action against the accused youngsters and occupants of the parado jeep. During the protest demonstration, senior police officers held negotiations with the students but of no avail as they were insisting to get a copy of an FIR from the police nominating all the three riders. The students also asked the police high-ups to medically examine the jeep riders claiming that they were under drug influence. Meanwhile, PML-N leader Khawaja Saad Rafique also reached the site and informed them that an FIR had been registered while the police teams had been dispatched for the arrest of the jeep driver. SP Cantt Ghulam Azfar told The Nation that one of the arrested accused was the son of an army officer. According to the preliminary investigations, he said, the accident took place due to rash driving. Defence B police registered an FIR on the complaint of the injured student. One of the arrested accused, the son of the army officer, has been kept in another police station not the concerned one.
