LAHORE - Former President Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) and Chairman National Coordination Committee Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan has warned the government against impeding the long march on March 9 next saying, the countrywide lawyers and the people accompanying them would stage sit-in then and there where the authorities would hamper their way on and the emerging situation would be more serious. Speaking to the Lahore High Court (LHC) Bar here Tuesday Aitzaz appeared uncertain about the fate of the Punjab government by the time the long march would be kicked off. In the context of previous long march held in June last, he said, then the PML-N did help the marchers but the lawyers did not call for any help from the provincial govt. As to the next long march, he said, they did not know what state the provincial govt would be in by that time, therefore they warn the government not to obstruct the long march. President LHCBA Anwar Kamal, President Lahore Bar Association Rana Zia Abdul Rahman, senior Vice President M R Awan, Vice President Khalid Ch, Secretary SC Bar Shaukat Umar Pirzada and Secretary LHCBA Rana Asadullah Khan also spoke to the gathering. Continuing, Aitzaz said their movement aims at restoring the November 2, 2007 judicial to function and get the PCO of Pervez Musharraf scrapped. According to him if the PCO was not reversed, the judiciary would remain dependent and 300/400 years would be needed to make it independent. Responding to a query put by Rana Asadullah, Aitzaz firmly and categorically said, he would never quit PPP however he would continue to go along with the movement with severe and emotional attachment. He said PPP had following of crores of people countrywide and majority of them wanted the fulfilment of the promise made by Benazir Bhutto Shaheed and those made in writing by the PPP co-chairperson about restoration of Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry and others through the mode set under Murree declaration. He said despite the fact he had been associated with PPP over the last 40 years, his difference with the party leadership over the judges issue is not a secret. Our struggle, he said, is for protecting the future of our new generations which otherwise is bleak when the burden of loans and empty kitty would be passed on to them. Therefore, the question right now is not confined to restoration of the judges but preserving future of the new generations for which lawyers are out. Aitzaz said over the last 60 years, national security of the country had preceded every other therefore the people failed to get their problems solved for the reason of paucity of resources. They have to now turn Pakistan into a welfare state, wherein not national security but welfare and betterment of the people is the prime concern, he said highlighting objectives of the lawyers movement. He said today the rich feel free to grab land of the poor to build colonies thereon. This exploitation, he said, is only because we are not a welfare state, and went on to say that, the loud slogan of 'go-Musharraf-go' raised by lawyers all over the country has come true to prove success of their movement while the other on restoration of judges is about to be materialised. He said bold and judges of independent mind make up for an independent judiciary wherein, he added, is the solution to all economic and other problems. At the concluding part of his speech, Aitzaz said, lawyers rest a firm faith in non-violence therefore, like the past, the upcoming long march would be completely peaceful and non-violent.
