Notice issued to LGS over "obscene" syllabus

LAHORE - Punjab Education Minister Rana Mashood Ahmad Khan said on Friday that the Punjab Education Department (PED) has issued notice to the Lahore Grammar School (LGS) for teaching “obscene” material to its six class students.  Addressing a press conference at the National Hockey Stadium, Rana Mashood said, “The Punjab government has issued notice to the LGS management and seek their reply. If they fail to reply within the given time, strict action would be taken against them and their registration can also be cancelled.”  He said when he came to know about the issue, he immediately took notice and ordered to remove “anti-Islamic and provocative” subjects from their syllabus.
“A special departmental committee was formed on the directives of chief minister which has submitted their report to the CM, based on its recommendations after a detailed review of controversial issues in the syllabus of the LGS. These issues include the removal of the subject of compulsory Islamic Studies from the curriculum of class six and its replacement with the subject of Religious Studies which is tantamount to mislead and confuse the youngsters,” he asserted.  The minister said the importance of private sector in promotion of education was quite evident but no one could be allowed to misuse this position. He added he was acting on a complaint from parents, that LGS was using provocative material, and educating using obscene material, which could prove provocative for the youth.
75 pc out of school children enrolled: The Punjab Education Department has achieved 75 per cent enrolment of out of school children during ongoing drive since August 14. Acting Executive District Officer (EDO) Malik Ashraf said this while talking to media here on Friday. He said 340, 000 children between the ages of four to ten years were out of schools while out of them 280,000 children have been enrolled at schools in nine towns of Lahore.
