LAHORE-The newly appointed Punjab Governor, Mr Salman Taseer has been tasked to galvanise the Pakistan Peoples Party in Punjab, besides ensuring that party gets its due share of power in the province, proportionate to its representation in the Punjab Assembly, it has been learnt reliably. Salman Taseer has already started meeting party delegations in the Governor House to have an assessment of weaknesses in the party cadres and then to devise a strategy to overcome them in consultation with senior party men. The PPP leaders who recently met Mr Taseer found him much enthusiastic about strengthening the party in Punjab vis--vis other parties, especially the PML-N, which is outshining its rival parties at the moment in the province. "Mr Zardari wants me to galvanise the PPP in Punjab and to watch party interests in the province", a PPP source quoted Taseer as having told to a party delegation that called on him at Governor House the other day. The Governor minced no words about his future intentions in his maiden speech after taking oath of his office on last Friday that he would make Punjab another Larkana. Party men, however, believe that Salman would be facing the tough challenge of turning Punjab, currently a PML-N stronghold, into a bastion of the PPP by the coming elections which may not be too far away given the present tension between the two coalition partners over certain key issues of national importance. They argue that given the poor PPP performance in the February 18 polls, it would be an uphill task for the Governor to decisively turn the power equation in PPP favour, especially when the party is not fully in power in the province. It merits mentioning here that PPP performed poorly in Punjab, as it got just 44 general seats (29.4 percent) in National Assembly from Punjab out of total 148 seats, unlike the PML-N, which managed to secure 61 National Assembly seats, 17 more than the PPP. Similarly, in Punjab Assembly, the PPP secured 80 general seats (26.9 per cent) out of total 297 seats. (general), 23 less than the PML-N which got 103 seats and thus emerged as the single largest party in Punjab .The number of total members of the PML-N in Punjab has now swelled to 164 after joining of the independents and with the addition of seats reserved for women. Analysts maintain that if the PML-N succeeds to win majority of 18 vacant provincial seats in the coming by-election, it would be short of just a few members to establish its simple majority in a House of 371. The PPP also performed poorly in Lahore, as it secured just two National Assembly seats out of 13, and an equal number of provincial seats under the 'dynamic' leadership of Haji Azizur Rehman Chan, who himself lost the election. Meanwhile, there are reports that the PML-N is not willing to give due share of power to the PPP in Punjab after its withdrawal from the federal cabinet over the issue of judges' restoration. The PML-N leadership in Punjab has already withdrawn some key ministries from the PPP ministers, and does not seem to be in a mood to implement the power-sharing formula agreed upon between the two sides. In this context, the new Punjab Governor has been asked by party chief Asif Ali Zardari to ensure that party gets due share of power proportionate to its representation in Punjab Assembly, said a party sources while taking to this scribe.
