LAHORE - Governor Punjab Ch Muhammad Sarwar has said that illiteracy and lack of education are the main reason behind extremism and terrorism in the country and without promoting quality education, the targets of national development cannot be achieved.
The present government is fully committed to equip everyone with education for which it has allocated additional resources. The Governor expressed views while addressing the 15th Convocation of University of Central Punjab here on Tuesday. Governor Punjab said that the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has decided to enhance funds for education in GDP from two per cent to four per cent.
At the same time he noted that 70 million children in Pakistan, of which 40 million are girls, do not go school.
The governor said besides promoting education much focus should also be given on research. He said future of the country rests in educating our generations as education plays a key role in the socio-economic development of a country.
Governor Punjab said that our institutions should be leading examples of equity, quality and relevance in professional education.
They must strive to improve the quality of education through diversification of content and adoption of modern methods and they must do it by promotion of universally shared values, experimentation, innovation and sharing of information and best practices as well as policy dialogue on education, he said.
He said that the University of Central Punjab is one such institution which is admirably contributing to this noble task.
Governor Punjab said that we must also pay due attention towards providing equal opportunities of intellectual growth to girls and women who constitute half of the society. He said that our women have amply proved their potential in all fields. He also said that every year, top positions in various exams, go to girls and they have made great achievements in almost all fields of life from academia to sports.
Gold Medals and certificates were distributed to the position-holders by the Governor Punjab.
