LAHORE - Underworld don Arif Ameer alias Tipu Truckanwala succumbed to bullet wounds here at Mayo Hospital on Friday, two days after he had been ambushed by gunmen in the parking lot of the Allama Iqbal International Airport. Dozens of his guards, equipped with sophisticated weapons, took positions around the hospital and City mortuary on Friday night when the police removed his body to the morgue for autopsy. Heavy police contingents were also deployed around the dead house to keep the things under control. Eyewitnesses said that the policemen otherwise, on-guard around the City mortuary, were watching the whole situation like silent spectators as the guards of the deceased Tipu Truckanwala took control of the morgue, where the doctors were conducting his autopsy. Local MPAs and MNAs of PML-N and a good number of residents of the area also reached the residence of Tipu in the Walled City soon after he was pronounced dead. It is worth mentioning here that gunmen opened indiscriminate fire on the vehicle of Tipu Truckanwala when he along with his family members was leaving for his residence from the airport on Wednesday night. He had arrived from Dubai when gunmen ambushed his vehicle. The police investigators said that the accused identified as Khurrum Ijaz had opened fire on Tipu. Tipu was rushed to the Mayo hospital in critical condition where he remained in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital for more than 40 hours. His condition could not get stable due to excessive bleeding and multiple wounds. The police arrested Khurrum Ijaz from the spot who later confessed to the police investigators that he had opened fire at Tipu to take the revenge of the murder of his brother Yasir, who was gunned down some four years ago. The police also registered the case against the accused and unidentified people and begun investigations. Hospital sources said that Tipu was shifted to the ICU after the doctors conducted his surgery that continued for more than six hours. He succumbed to bullet wounds on Friday evening. Meanwhile, close female relatives of the notorious gangster Mubeen Butt, opponent of Tipu Truckanwala, who was gunned down during a fake encounter near Kot Lakhpat Jail a couple of days ago, staged a strong protest demonstration at The Mall. The women protesters blocked the road and disrupted the traffic flow for a considerable time. Later, heavy police contingents reached the spot. The policemen also thrashed the women when they refused to clear the road for traffic. The policemen however, managed to disperse them after a brief scuffle. The women protesters alleged that the police gunned down Mubeen Butt in a fake encounter on the abetment of Tipu Truckanwala. Tipu Truckanwala belonged to Gowalmandi area and was involved in a number of murder cases. He had also enmity with several underworld gangs of the provincial metropolis. Late on Friday night, his body was shifted to his residence under tight security. The situation was tense in the entire locality till filing of this report. Heavy policemen were also on guard to avoid any further untoward incident. Further investigations were underway.
