50 years on, Thai princess in parents footsteps

LAHORE - Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand feasted on the fond memories through the pictures of her parents’ 1962 visit to Lahore and savoured the warm hospitality at the luncheon hosted for the Thai Royal Highness by Punjab Governor Latif Khosa at the Governor’s House on Thursday.  The pictures from the Governor House photo library, shown on the multimedia, relived the youthful days of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha’s parents: His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Her Majesty Queen Regent Sirikit who had visited the Punjab Governor’s House in March 1962 and the Princess’ visit coincided exactly 50 years later in March 2012.
At a solemn ceremony held at the Drawing Room, the Punjab Governor presented a photograph book on the Punjab Governor’s House, a souvenir and a hand-woven carpet to the Royal Highness. The ceremony was attended by diplomats, dignitaries, senior journalists, politicians including Begum Zakia Shahnawaz of the PML-N and TheNation Managing Editor Rameeza Majid Nizami. Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn also offered some mementos to the Punjab Governor including an elephant carved in bronze (elephant is the national animal of Thailand) and her publications.
Later, Her Highness planted a Moulsri sapling at the lawns of the Governor’s House beside the mango tree which was planted by her parents some 50 years ago.
The Punjab Governor also presented two Barbri goats to Princess Maha as a token of friendship and love from the people of Pakistan for the Thai Royalty.
Earlier, the Punjab Governor had a one-on-one meeting with the Princess and welcomed her on behalf of the people of Pakistan, expressing the hope that the relations between the two countries will foster with every passing day.
Khosa said that Pakistan looked forward to more visits of the Thai royalty to Pakistan. She appreciated Pakistan’s role in the war against terror and said her visit will reinforce traditionally cordial ties between Pakistan and Thailand.
