Pakistan wary of a resurgent Sri Lanka

LAHORE - Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik looked confident even after losing the second ODI against Sri Lanka and would go full throttle with the best possible combination to win the final game of the three-match rubber to clinch the series here today (Saturday). The tourists are showing more confidence after coming on level terms with Pakistan after the earlier two matches. The teams will begin the action at 11.30 pm at the Gaddafi Stadium under an extensive security blanket. The chances are that both pacers Shoaib Akhtar and Sohail Tanveer would be rested with some sources close to the latter saying that he did not like the term dropped. A report also says that Akhtar has also been asked not to come to the stadium. The bowlers would most likely be replaced with Sohail Khan and Saeed Ajmal. But Malik wants the best available combination on the field and also denied to have commented against Akhtar. He rejected the toss factor in the match but expressed his desire to bat first and post 270-plus on the board. "In the presence of world class spinners chasing such a target is very difficult. If they bat first I would want my bowlers to restrict them to below 250 and in case we go for bat I want such a score that would be hard to achieve," said Mali. He also supported Shoaib Akhtar saying that coming to the field after an absence of 11 month has dented his rhythm. "That does not mean his cricket is over. He has won several matches single-headedly," he added. He further said that good performances don't come everyday and the key bowler on the day would be the one who sticks to the basic. On fielding, Malik said that things cant change overnight and he by no means feels any pressure of the final game and rather wants players to give their best in the three and a half hour period. He also defended Afridi as a bowler and expressed his confidence that the way he was playing in the nets his form would return soon. Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene feels more confident after the second ODI win. "Its always difficult to win back to back matches but the way the team played and came back in the series after going down in the first match it is admirable. "I believe it's a new game. We need to start afresh and work hard like we did in the previous game to win. Its not going to be an easy game," said the Sri Lankan captain. He further said that they were working on the game plan and were not targeting any individuals like Akhtar. Praising Muttiah Muralitharan, he said that though he was on brink of making history he does not feel like doing it now. Muralitharan needs five more wickets to become the highest wicket-taker in ODIs. The off-spinner needs two more wickets to become only the second bowler to cross the 500-mark in limited overs. Another three would help him overtake Pakistan's Wasim Akram's one-day tally of 502. "He understands the need of the team and would not be in any hurry. Winning the series would be more a motivation for the team to come up to the expectations. "Toss wont play any substantial role because the game can change anytime and every player has played enough cricket to understand the importance of the game," he added.
