CDG decides to confiscate adulterated milk

LAHORE - The city district government has decided to confiscate adulterated milk in its new campaign starting from today (Tuesday), sources informed The Nation on Monday. Two special squads comprising nine food inspectors will carry out the operation in the city. For this purpose the city has been divided into two parts, one team comprising food inspectors of concerned towns will carry out crackdown in the areas falling under Data Gunj Bukhsh Town, Iqbal Town, Samanabad Town and Nishtar Town while five member squad will launch operation in the areas of Ravi Town, Shalimar Town, Aziz Bhatti Town, Wahga Town and Gulberg Town. Chief Food Inspector Muhammad Ayoub Chaudhry will supervise the operation and submit report to the district coordination officer on daily basis. Officials say that CDG food department has decided to change its strategy for making the operation a success. "Besides routine sampling, special teams will measure the density of milk with lactometer on the spot. "The adulterated milk will be confiscated", a CDG official disclosed. Unlike the past practice the adulterated milk will be confiscated for the first time. Earlier the food inspectors were only mandated to collect samples, analyse them from the laboratory and send challans of failed samples to the concerned courts for further action. This process was too mild for the adulterators to deter them from watering down milk. "In view of the futility of this exercise, the CDG has hanged the strategy and decided to confiscate the adulterated milk to punish the culprits. This will also reduce the prospects of adulterated milk reaching to the consumers", the official said. Milk is the most adulterated food item consumed by the Lahorites. The CDG food squad collected 97 milk samples during the last month. Out of 97 collected samples, 60 were found adulterated with water. As such 61.86 per cent of the samples collected from different parts of the city were found adulterated with water.
