Pakistan to host Asian Hockey Champions Trophy

LAHORE - Pakistan will host the first-ever Asian Hockey Champions Trophy next year as part of the plan to develop the game in the region. Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, President Pakistan Hockey Federation Qasim Zia said that the PHF had suggested the event during the Asian Hockey Federation congress held in Kuala Lumpur. PHF Secretary Asif Bajwa and International Hockey Federation's manager coaching development Tayyab Ikram were also present at the press conference. He said that the congress welcomed the PHF suggestion. "The trophy if implemented would be played on the Champions Trophy pattern, which was also introduced by Pakistan way back in 1978. He further said that Pakistan has got extensive representation in the AHF committees, which has happened for the first time in Asia. He further said that the AHF has also given the hosting rights of the qualifying rounds of 2010 World Junior world Cup for Women. He also praised the performance of the Pakistan hockey team in the Junior Asia Cup held in Kuala Lumpur. For the revival of the game at home front, he said that open trials will be held from January 1 to 7 and the selected players will be put in the academies for further training. He said that provincial selection committees have been formed to watch the trials. The selection committees includes Anjum Saeed (chairman), Shabbir Ahmad, Muhammad Ahlaq, Khalid Rasool and Gulraiz Sheikh for Punjab. Wasim Feroze, Mumtaz Haider and Muhammad Khalid for Sindh. Zeeshan Ashraf, Shakeel Abbasi, Ghulam Gillani for Balochistan and Naeem Akhtar, Musadaq Khan,Rahim Khan, Zia Banoori for NWFP. Meanwhile, International Hockey Federation's Coaching Manager, Tayyab Ikram pointed out that a number of issues brought the fall of hockey in Pakistan. He said that the requirement is of consistency in the development work. "As an FIH official I believe that it is the need of hour to continue the development plans and the steps taken by the PHF seem to put it the right track," he added. He also talked about the need of qualified coaches as the one of the major requirement of the development of the game. "In the recent past there were no qualified coaches in the country and that was another set back for the game," he added. He said Pakistan players are full of potential and talent and the requirement is of giving them training to the lines of modern technology. He added that the first four players who were declared natural and skilful hockey players were from Pakistan. He said hiring a foreign coach was not the solution and what is most important to assign the foreign coach a role to fit in the development structure. to run a programme to correct the basics. "What the PHF needs is to have proper structure and other development plans following the European countries to come out of present crisis", he added.
