LAHORE - The 10th convocation of Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) was held in the University Auditorium on Monday.
On the occasion, 1,165 students who have passed BS, MS/ MPhil, PhD and Pharm-D in the year 2011 were given degrees. About 146 students were awarded Rolls of Honour and 43 first position were given gold medals.
Punjab Education Minister Mujtaba Shujaur Rahamn was the chief guest while the LCWU Vice Chancellor Dr Sabiha Mansoor presided over the convocation.
Speaking on the occasion, the minister said financial grant was being provided especially to the institutions of women. He said new women universities were also being established in Bahawalpur, Multan, Sialkot and Faisalabad for enhancing ratio of higher education among women.
The Punjab government had opened 50 colleges in the province during last four years, out of which 12 colleges are in Lahore. He said government was implementing a comprehensive policy for the up-gradation of higher education in the province, he added.
He said the government was implementing a comprehensive strategy for imparting modern education to the students and Rs 195 billion would be spent on education sector during the current fiscal year which was 25 per cent of the total budget of the province.
Mujtaba said that scholarships were being given to 50 thousand students from Punjab Education Endowment Fund this year.
Earlier, speaking at the convocation, LCWU VC said the varsity would be a leading teaching and research university nationally and globally and a hub of academic excellence producing highly skilled, professionally empowered, well groomed and values’ driven women to make a positive difference in the socio-economic development of Pakistan according to its vision 2020.
