LAHORE - Crimes Investigation Agency (CIA) police on Thursday claimed to have busted a gang involved in looting international passengers arriving at the Lahore Airport.
Police sources revealed that members of this inter-district gang, disguised as Customs, FIA, police and Anti-Narcotics Force officials, had been involved in looting passengers landing from abroad at the Allama Iqbal International Airport.
“According to their modus-operandi, the gangsters used to chase passengers right from the airport. They used to intercept international passengers at the place of their choice,” a Lahore police spokesman said on Thursday.
During preliminary interrogations, the arrested dacoits confessed more than 30 incidents of robbery and dacoity including several offences of looting passengers coming from abroad.
The CIA police team headed by DSP CIA (Kotwali Circle) Khalid Abu Bakar arrested the ringleader of the gang and six accomplices during a special operation. Police investigators have recovered two million rupees including foreign currency, gold ornaments, cellular phones and automatic weapons from their possession, added the police spokesperson.
Police sources further said that Lahore Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Chaudhry Shafiq Ahmed took serious notice of the sudden rise in armed robberies in which many international passengers had been robbed at gunpoint when they were on the way home from the airport. SP (CIA) Umar Virk deployed a special police team at various points to unearth the gang which had become a challenge for the Lahore police. Police said that the gang had been operating actively in the airport surroundings and was brazenly committing armed robberies even in broad daylight.
The DSP Kotwali started surveillance of the gangsters by deploying plainclothesmen at the identified points. According to sources, DSP was informed that gangsters were in action and chasing the car of a family which landed at the Allama Iqbal International Airport.
The CIA Kotwali launched the covert operation and successfully arrested the gang, identified as Usman Butt and his partners.
Police also recovered looted goods in shape of cash, cell phones, and other valuables besides illegal weapons.
The other members of this gang were identified as Muhammad Awais, Saif Ullah alias Chappah Pathan, Nasir alias Kaka, Muhammad Farhan, Umer Hayat, and, Amir alias Sunny. Police said that the gang’s leader, Usman alias Mana Butt, and Chappah Pathan had already been declared as proclaimed offenders in several cases of dacoity.
The police officials said that several cases had also been traced against the bandits in the Sabzazar, Nawan Kot, Johar Town, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Township, Harbanspura, Badami Bagh, Shadbagh, Ravi Road, Millat Park, Larry Adda, Shahdara Town, Islampura, Nawab Town, Sanda, Satu Katla, Shafiqabad, Garden Town, and Mozang police stations. Investigation police chief DIG Zulfiqar Hameed has announced cash awards and commendatory certificates for the police team.
