LAHORE - Mian Mehmood-ur-Rasheed who is holding the position of Punjab Assembly Opposition Leader, is under dark clouds as the PTI high command is likely to remove him if accusations against him concerning a deal with the provincial government to get some personal benefits proved, The Nation has learnt.
Mehmood who was former PTI City chapter President and now leading the Opposition in the Provincial Assembly, was under fire even among the party circles for striking an alleged deal with ruling party of Punjab to obtain personal benefits. Punjab Assembly Opposition Leader had become focus of criticism after the promotion and posting of his brother Hamid Rasheed on an important position in Lahore Development Authority (LDA) a few days back under an alleged secret deal between Mehmood and the provincial government.
However, Mehmood claimed that his brother had been working for 20 years in the department and his promotion was due and certain quarters were maligning him in an effort to pressurise him for not raising his voice of protest from the Opposition benches in the Punjab Assembly.
Commenting over PPP leader’s statement alleging him striking a secret deal with the provincial government, he claimed that Raja Riaz’s accusations were a pack of lies and infact PPP leader’s Press conference was aimed at PTI’s November 1 protest call on the instructions of the PML-N. Sources in PTI privy to the developments regarding Mehmood’s episode told this correspondent on Thursday that the matter of allegations against Mehmood would be taken up in party’s upcoming core committee meeting to be chaired by Imran Khan.
They quoted senior party leaders as stating on the matter that a proposal was under consideration at top party level to form a committee to probe into the allegations against Mehmood and he should be removed from Opposition Leader’s position if found guilty, besides tendering resignation from the Punjab Assembly seat. The said proposal would be floated in the forthcoming meeting of party’s core committee. Mehmood’s opposite camp in the party led by Aleem Khan a known representative of land developers barons would get breathing space if he (Mehmood) removed from Opposition leader office.
However, Aleem’s Unity group could not be able to occupy the Opposition leader office even with the removal of Mehmood, as he has no potential candidate in his camp to become Opposition Leader.
Sources maintained that the founder of the Ideological group in PTI, Mehmood-ur-Rasheed was under suspicion among party circles for sometime for his alleged association with the provincial rulers under a secret deal, however, promotion and posting of Mehmood’s brother on an important position in LDA supported these suspicions.
A senior party leader when asked who would be PTI next Opposition Leader candidate if Mehmood is removed, he said that party has made no list for this purpose.
He claimed that has many natural candidates for the position of Opposition Leader among its Provincial Assembly members and it would not be an issue for party top leadership to nominate a new Opposition Leader.
However, he said that Sabtain Khan, Mian Aslam Iqbal, Ahmed Ali Khan Dareshak and Raja Rashid Hafiz could be considered as the candidates for Opposition Leader in case Mehmood shown the door if prove guilty in this case.
