Police pester prosecutors = Lahore maid cases

Lahore maid cases

LAHORE - Police have not been cooperating prosecutors in much-hyped maid cases of Lahore, it has been learnt reliably.
A special four-prosecutor squad has been formed to guide police concerned in evidence collection in the cases of brutalities against maids reported during the current month.
According to sources, police are unwilling to accept supervisory of prosecutors, claiming that they (investigating cops) “better know their responsibilities”.
The prosecution department also lacks proper infrastructure to look into such sensitive matters – even it does not offer transportation and conveyance allowance to its officer in such cases.
A senior prosecutor asked: “How can official concerned visit from the district prosecution office to the Raiwind police station?”
The city has 93 police stations, he recalled. The prosecutor stressed the need for drafting legislation to bound police to cooperate the prosecutors.
When contacted, Capital City Police Officer Chaudhary Shafiq said police always “cooperate” with prosecutors. “Before submission of challans to the courts, they got them checked by prosecutors.”
However, he stressed the need for training to investigators.
On January 19, MAO teacher Prof Salman was arrested after her maid reported to have been tortured brutally at his Defence house. Fiza lost battle for life at Lahore Services Hospital a day later. Medical reports also pointed to sexual assault on the victim.
On January 5, sixteen-year-old Azra fell prey to employers’ brutality. On January 4, a 10-year-old domestic helper was beaten to death. On January 2, Erum Ramazan, a 10-year-old domestic help.
These are scores of such cases that goes unreported because of perception that reports rap the victim(s), not the rapist(s).
