Lawyer killed in gun and grenade attack

LAHORE - Panic gripped the Sessions Court premises on Wednesday following an assailant carried out gun and bomb attack on the lawyers over old enmity, leaving two people dead including the attacker and a lawyer while injuring two others here in Islampura police limits. Police and eyewitnesses said that the attacker reached near a group of lawyers who were sitting outside the Sessions Court, opened fire on them and hurled hand grenades, triggering stampede during rush hours. The assailant later identified as Dr Hanif Kamran and his rival Advocate Rana Mahboob died on the spot, while another two namely advocate Qamar Chadhar and Court Librarian Mukhtar sustained multiple wounds and were rushed to the Mayo Hospital in critical condition. The clean-shaved attacker, with white face and clad in Safari suit, was a good looking man. The 43-year-old gunman was carrying three pistols and hand grenades in a bag. He managed to approach a group of lawyers, where his opponent advocate Rana Mahboob was also sitting, Advocate Mian Abrar an eyewitness told reporters at the crime scene. As he reached near the lawyers, Rana Mahboob got conscious and tried to overpower him. In the meantime, he opened fire on the lawyer and hurled hand grenade and the explosion triggered panic in the entire locality. Advocate Rana Mahboob, 40, sustained bullet wounds and died on the spot while other lawyers also sustained severe wounds shortly after the grenade exploded near them. The attackers opened fire when advocate Qamar Chadhar and Court Librarian Mukhtar tried to capture him. Both sustained sever injures and fell down. The attacker tried to flee from the spot by scaling the broken boundary wall but fell down, as a result another hand grenade exploded in his feet. His both legs were fractured after the explosion but he tried to flee when the policemen who were on guard there opened fire on him, eyewitnesses said. The attacker sustained serious bullet wounds and died on the spot. Heavy police contingents reached the spot within no time and cordoned off the entire locality. The police recovered two hand grenades and three pistols from the crime scene. The police also removed the bodies to the morgue for autopsy. The Islampura police have also registered a case and are investigating. Police sources believed that the attacker tried to kill his opponent lawyer in the court premises and brought hand grenade to manage his escape from the scene by creating lawlessness situation. The modus operandi of the attacker also indicates that he tried to convert the old enmity incident into terrorism to mislead the investigators, a police investigator said, adding, but he was killed on the spot. The police are also investigating the case keeping in view various aspects of the happening. The investigators are also probing from where the attacker got hand grenades to carry out the brazen attack in the broad daylight. Police investigators said that the attacker had old enmity against advocate Rana Mahboob, as the lawyer was appearing in the court against him in three different cases. Dr Hanif Kamran was running a private hospital near Shalamar Garden in Cantonment area. Police sources said that Nolakha police had also registered a rape case against the attacker in 2008 on the complaint of a woman Naziran Bibi. The deceased advocate was the counsel against the attacker in that rape case. Police sources further said that sister of the advocate suffered from kidney failure during her treatment at the hospital owned by the attacker. The advocate was also appearing against him in the said case. Dr Hanif Kamran developed grudge against the lawyer who was pursuing criminal case against him. Further investigations were underway.
