Address urgent issues of labourers: Seminar

LAHORE – Pakistan Workers Confederation (PWC) General Secretary Khursheed Ahmed on Wednesday urged the federal and provincial governments to take steps for addressing urgent issues of the working class.
The union leaders suggested that electricity and gas generation capacity should be enhanced on war footing, and the same should be provided to the national industry and agriculture for combating growing unemployment in the country.
Besides freezing the prices of essential commodities and raising the minimum wage to Rs15,000 a month, they demanded of the government to provide free legal assistance to workers from the Workers Welfare Fund and appoint presiding officers in Labour Courts for speedy decisions.
They said that the labour laws, including Industrial Relations Act, 2012, should be amended in conformity with the ILO treaties and urged the government to reinstate PTCL and KESC’s sacked workers.
They welcomed the decision of the lslamabad High Court to restore the lawful status of Pakistan WAPDA Hydro Electric Central Labour Union and said that transparent use of the funds allocated for workers welfare schemes should be ensured. They also called on the government to allot Ashiana Housing Scheme flats to eligible workers.
