Wapda retain National Cycling C'ship title

LAHORE - Defending champion Wapda retained the 57th National Cycling Championship title here Saturday followed by Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) and Army at the second and third slots respectively. Wapda clinched eight gold, two silver and four bronze medals in the competition. SSGC bagged one gold, four silver and one bronze medals, while Army could manage three silver and two bronze medals. On the final day, 4 kms Team Pursuit was contested and Wapda with 4M-46S-85P was the winner. Army and SSGC were second and third while was Punjab fourth. In 1 kms Sprint, Noor Alam of Wapda was winner, SSGC's Zulfiqar Ali second and Naved of Wapda third In the Team Sprint, Wapda, SSGC and Army were the winners of first three positions respectively while Punjab was fourth And in the Elimination Race, Dilshar Ali of Wapda stood first with M. Rafiq and Zulfiqar Ali were second and third. National Champion Zulfiqar Ali Wapda with 46 points was the best cyclist while the fastest cyclist was Noor Alam of SSGC Wapda got 275 points, SSGC 131, Army 110, Punjab was 4th with 47th points, Railways 37 points, Sindh 9 points. Wapda Sports Board President and General Manager (Administration) Naveed Akram Cheema was the chief guest on the occasion, who gave away trophies, medals and other prizes to the winning teams and players. A good number of dignitaries including Abdul Khaliq Khan, Secretary General Pakistan Olympic Association and Secretaries of the National Federations, Provincial Sports Secretaries and PCF secretary Idris Haider Khawaja were present on the occasion. The 5-day National Cycling Championship was organized by WAPDA Sports Board. The cyclists of nine teams competed in nine different events during the championship.
