Qadeer made Pak defence invincible, says Nizami

LAHORE - Editor-in-Chief The Nation and Chairman Nazria Pakistan Trust, Majid Nizami has said that if there would have been no nuclear capacity in Pakistan, the country might have become slave to India. Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan made the defence of Pakistan invincible, he said. He said this while addressing a ceremony organised by the Nazria Pakistan Trust in collaboration with the Tehrik-e-Pakistan Workers Trust in connection with Youm-e-Takbeer at Aiwan-e-Karkunan Tehrik-e-Pakistan on Wednesday. Majid Nizami said that ex-Prime Minister ZA Bhutto called Dr AQ Khan from Holland and directed him to attain nuclear capability in reply to Indian nuclear explosion. ZA Bhutto also offered him full support, he added. He said, "After independence, we inherited three enemies in form of India, US and Israel." He pledged to expose Indian design, which aimed at our elimination as a nation but we should be prepared to counter it, he added. When on 1st May 1998, Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif called a meeting of the editors for consultation after the Indian explosions and to tackle the US pressure, Nizami said that he impressed upon Mian Sahib to carry out the nuclear blasts lest the nation would blast him while majority of the editors were against it, he maintained. Mr Nizami said that US President Clinton offered Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif millions of dollars to stop nuclear tests but thank God, Nawaz Sharif comprehended the situation. After the nuclear explosions, the PM informed him first on May 28, he told. He said that it was unfortunate that Dr AQ Khan was under house arrest. "A few days ago, he telephoned me and said that he was happy for performing the feat but became weak due to continuous detention," he said. Justice (r) Dr Javed Iqbal said that not only Pakistanis but people of other Islamic countries also considered Dr AQ Khan as their hero. The government should come up to the expectations of the nation by releasing the national hero, he added. Dr Javed Iqbal said that India threatened Pakistan by the nuclear explosion to abandon Kashmir but (late) ZA Bhutto refused to accept Indian supremacy. While quoting Bhutto, he said, "We will make atom bomb even we have to eat grass." He said that Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif refused Clinton, as the people gave him mandate. Wherever he went to visit the Muslim countries, the people appreciated our nuclear capacity, he told. Dr Javed Iqbal said that the youth should be educated in science and technology. He demanded immediate release of Dr AQ Khan and said that accusations on Dr AQ Khan were not right. Pakistan Muslim League-N MNA Khawaja Saad Rafique said that Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif resisted foreign pressure because he were enjoying mandate of the people and this was a major difference between democracy and autocracy, he said. Prof Dr Rafique Ahmad said that nuclear detonation on May 28 made Pakistan invincible. India wanted to wipe out Pakistan but this was not an easy task for her now, he added. He also demanded immediate release of Dr AQ Khan. Mian Aziz-ul-Haq Qureshi said that Dr AQ Khan was towering personality after Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Allama Muhammad Iqbal. He said, "We consider ourselves safe but India is continuously trying to destabilise our country by blocking waters of our rivers." Allama Ahmad Ali Kasuri, Col (r) Ikramullah, Dr Parveen Khan, Dr MA Soofi, Prof Saeed Alam Zaidi and Prof Muhammad Muzaffar Mirza also addressed on this occasion.
