Principal being shown exit for stepping onto sensitive toes

LAHORE The Board of Governors of Kinnaird College for Women is meeting here on Saturday (today) for the second time in the running month in which it is expected that the incumbent Principal Dr Bernadette L. Dean is being shown the exit door primarily owing to the reason that in the last meeting she has stepped onto some sensitive toes, and in her domain, she is said to have hurt the interests of a few well-entrenched, both in the College and its BoGs. This is being done by the Board, which has been granted extension from the very next day of its expiryMay 13by the Punjab Higher Education Department in the 'name of the competent authority though the summary for its reconstitution has reached Chief Ministers desk on May 25 after it had been shuttlecocked in the bureaucratic baskets since March 19 when the letter for the BoGs reconstitution was initiated for the first time. During this intermittent period, Secretary Law Department had raised objections to the new nominees and the purview of the existing BoGs, which made the HED to recast the summary without changing the names. Secondly, the HED summary for the continuation should have been done 'By the Order of the Governor instead of the Secretary HED Ahad Khan Cheema, which shows lack of seriousness and perpetuation of adhocism in the prime provincial department for the premier educational institution, as the Department should have visualised the impending expiry of the Board and done its homework, opined an officer, adding that the HED might be treating other institutes with lesser name more recklessly. This summary has been written in haste sans adopting the proper procedure, concluded the officer, seeking anonymity. On the other hand, interestingly, the qualification of the members to become part of the illustrious BoG has not been mentioned in the Punjab Kinnaird College for Women Ordinance 2002 of the Musharraf days, which is deemed to be mala fide considering the fact that at least some qualifications should have been outlined for the persons to be inducted. However, as per sources, the CM is yet to sign the dotted line for the induction of new members. Todays emergent meeting of the BoGs has been called 'to discuss the Kinnaird crisis as a single agenda item. This has been issued by the Vice-Chairman BoGs Eric Massey. This is in total contradiction to the request moved by Secretary HED, who has mentioned that the meeting should be called to discuss the recommendations and observations of the tribunal and committee constituted by the CM, mentioned the source. One of members of the BoG confided that this meeting is actually the continuation of the last one held on May 10, where Dr Dean pointed out audit paragraphs of the much-controversial post-graduate block of the KC, which did not sat well with a few members of the Board, and they explicitly showed their anger by sending Dr Dean and her Vice-Principal Nikhat Khan out of the hall. The BoGs gave an open-ended 15-days deadline to the Principal 'to mend wrongs or though there was no mention of the specific agenda. Both doctors Dean and Khan were also given warning to erase fences. Nevertheless, there is a possibility that Dr Dean could be asked to resign in the name of 'Kinnaird College traditions and resolving the so-called crisis like her predecessor Ira Hassan, predicted the member, who averred that instead of changing the principals repeatedly, the Musharraf-Ordinance should be amended and the BoG should be revamped 'rather than keeping the oldies on oxygen and inducting their favourites in the Board for mending the wrongs done by the individuals scratching eachothers back since 1996 when the Board was formed for the first time.
