Police lethargy creating problems for petitioners

LAHORE - Most of the Station House Officers (SHOs) of City have become habitual in not responding and attending the courts, timely, even in the important cases due to which the petitioners are facing problems, lower officials revealed to TheNation. As per details, courts working in District Lahore are ready to dispose of and resolve the cases including murder, family, habeas corpus petitions and other civil cases but petitioners are suffering a lot on account of the non-professional attitude and lethargic way of duty of SHOs who are not obeying the court orders. Lower officials of different courts, requesting anonymity, revealed that SHOs of various police stations in the city always showed lethargic attitude even when they appeared before courts, adding that use of different pretexts by them could also be a reason behind the inordinate delays in the dispensation of justice. The court officials claimed that judges are trying their level best to give timely judgments in the best interest of people (petitioners) and supremacy of the law. But the main helping hand (SHOs and investigation officers of cases of different natures) were not playing their due role in the timely dispensation of justice. They said that show cause notices and arrest warrants for SHOs, sub-inspectors and assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) had become a routine matter at courts due to which they (police officials) many times were arrested as punishment. Giving examples of show cause notices and arrests warrants for SHOs and other officials of police by different additional district and sessions courts, the officials of courts said that the SHOs of Gulshan-e-Ravi and Sattu Katla were issued notices on Wednesday and Thursday last, one inspector of Shadbagh and the SHO of Islampura Police were also served show cause notices along with the non-bailable arrest warrants for not producing the witnesses in the murder cases. Additional District and Sessions Judge Chaudhry Ameer Muhammad Khan on Thursday issued notice to Inspector (Inv) Shadbagh Police in a case NO-188/9(302) for not appearing in the court, and another court of a judge Muhammad Mohsin Raza Khan issued the non-bailable arrest warrants for the Islampura Police SHO for not producing the witnesses in the court as the court also issued the arrest warrants of the two witnesses in the case. The court issued the ordered to withhold salary of the SHO. Some days ago, a sub-inspector Ehasanullah of the Cantt Police was also handcuffed in the District Sessions Court for not following the court orders as he was ordered to present the exact report against a habeas corpus petition on which he remained to comply with. On unconditional apology, the court released him when DSP and SHO concerned also appeared before the court. Officials of court also revealed that backlog of pending cases could be reduced to a great extent through timely 'cooperation of the police officials in most of the cases. Shopkeeper commits suicide A 22-year-old man committed suicide by swallowing poisonous pills here in Baghbanpura area, police said on Thursday. Hafiz Usman, owner of a bookshop, was facing sever financial constraints for the last several months, police said. The resident of Sukh Nahar Usman got disillusioned after he faced worst losses in his business, as he was unable to repay the loans. The police handed over the body to the deceaseds family without autopsy.
