LAHORE - Law Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan appreciating the importance of appointing a woman officer at each police station throughout the province to exclusively deal with the complaints of women, told the Punjab Assembly Friday that the government would give a serious thought to execute this suggestion floated by the Opposition benches during the Question-Hour proceedings. During the smooth proceedings of the hour, the Speaker Rana Muhammad Iqbal also accommodated another suggestion put in by the Opposition member Syed Nazim Hussain Shah to enhance the question session to two hours or allocate full days for this purpose in view of the increased number of members in the House. The chair announced to consider this matter in a private meeting with the concerned one as rules of the Assembly were to be amended for this purpose. On a supplementary question of Syeda Bushra Nawaz Gardezi, the Law Minister admitted that the citizens went abroad to serve as driver but do not have driving skills thereby they were not only bringing bad name to the country but they were posing risk to the life of others and he assured the house to take measures to prevent this practice. He however said that if the federal govt stiffened the immigration rules in this behalf, the Punjab government could also follow the same. On a question by Rana Afzal Khan that crime rate was increasing day-by-day and as first step to control crimes, one police station should be divided into two or three. The Law Minister assured the house to consider this suggestion as he himself felt the need of expanding the police stations to arrest the crime rate. The speaker assembly taking a serious view of the fact that department did not furnish answers in time ruled that next time the minister would be responsible for that and be also asked next day what action he took against the relevant officer for the delinquency. A section of the members grieved that answers to the question are furnished by the departments 15 months after and discussion on them become further late due to house not being in session and meanwhile during this period things, situation etc undergo changes calling for the fresh questions which is again put into the same lengthy cycle. They called for evolving a mechanism for rapid answers to the questions so that instead of groping in the past the members debate the questions on the current situation. The Speaker took note of that.
