Secy Home orders jammers installation

LAHORE - Provincial Home Secretary has issued instructions to install mobile phone jammers in the jails to ensure suspension of inmates contacts with their family members and friends. Secretary Home has also instructed all the DCOs of the province to pay surprise to the their respective jails to monitor the mobile phone use by the staff, inmates and visitors. He further advised the DCOs to punish the jail staff involved in illegal exercise. It is worth mentioning that superintendents of different jails had expressed their anger over the matter as criminals were running their gangs outside the prisons by using the cellular phones. In this regard, Superintendent Camp Jail Gulzar Butt said he had proposed supply of 45 jammers, while the sources in the Kot Lakhpat Jail are of the view that about 55 jammers were required to jam the mobile phone services within the premises. But on the other hand, lower staff of jails were involved in the helping the prisoners after receiving hefty payments. Seeking anonymity, a jail superintendent said he was first in favour of giving facility of cell phones to the prisoners; but soon he came to know that majority of them use the facility for negative purposes. He said when a citizen breaches the law of land his basic rights are suspended, then why the luxury of contact with others should available to the criminals in the prisons. He said jammers would be installed not only in the barracks but also in the cordoned off areas so that complete ban could be imposed, while the service would also be jammed in the 'bakhshi khanas (custodial care rooms) at the courts. A DIG prisons said IG prisons in meeting with the secretary Home had apprised him about the need of jammers in the jails and a summary in this regard was prepared. But he was not aware about the instructions of secretary Home about the installation of jammers in the jails.
