LAHORE – The Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) has failed to meet the deadline of three months, set by the chief minister on March 11, as heaps of garbage on different roads and streets have exposed the performance of the Company and government’s claims as well, TheNation has learnt. 
The new cleaning system of the LWMC is operational in only 16 of the 150 union councils of the City though almost four and an half months have passed since its inauguration. The Company even could not approach the vicinities of eastern, northern and southern parts of the City.
A survey of some residential localities including China Scheme, Shadbagh, Kot Khawaja Saeed, Badami Bagh, Misri Shah, Bhagatpura, Bhogiwal, Baghbanpura, Sodiwal, Daroghawala, Mehmood Booty of southern and eastern Lahore revealed that stinking heaps of garbage and scattered home waste in every nook and corner was causing nuisance for the residents.
The area people complained that the sweepers and waste lifting staffers of union councils and the LWMC used to get money from them for removing waste from their roads and streets. Majeed Butt, a resident of Kot Khawaja Saeed said he complained the authorities concerned against the waste lifting staffers but all in vain.
LDA director dies: Lahore development Authority (LDA) Director Tariq Masud, who was currently on deputation with the federal government as the administrator of Azad Kashmir Properties, dies on Sunday morning in a road accident on Motorway near Bhera.
His namaz-e-janaza was offered at Atta Ullah Park, Near Ayyubia Market, D-block, New Muslim Town, Lahore. Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs Manzoor Wattoo, LDA officers and a large number of people from all walks of life participated in the funeral.
LDA Director General Ahad Khan Cheema has expressed his deep sense of grief and sorrow over the sad demise of Tariq Masud, and prayed to the Almighty Allah that the departed soul may rest in eternal peace and tranquility.\
1,885 homes built for flood victims: The Punjab government has constructed as many as 1,885 model homes for the affectees of 2010 floods, of which the keys of 1,705 homes have already been distributed among the affectees, while the keys of the remaining 180 homes would also be soon handed over to them.
These model homes had been constructed at a hefty amount of Rs1.6 billion, said Punjab Disaster Management Authority Director General Mujahid Sherdil while addressing officers belonging to administrative and financial wings of the department.
Sherdil informed that as many as 180 model homes had been constructed in the tehsils of Darya Khan and Rojhan in Bhakkar and Rajanpur districts, respectively, and the keys of these newly-constructed houses would also be soon handed over to the allottees. Sherdil asserted that these model homes had been constructed and handed over to the flood victims within the stipulated time.
