Impure water great threat to Lahorites: CJ

LAHORE - The Lahore High Court on Tuesday adjourned till July 6 hearing of a suo moto notice against the alleged presence of arsenic contents in water of 352 tube wells of Wasa supplying drinking water to the citizens. Chief justice Khawaja Muhammad Shairf had taken suo moto notice on June 28 on a news report titled 'Wasa seeking second opinion on water arsenic published in a local newspaper. According to the news report, out of 392 some 352 tube wells of Wasa and LDA are pumping out arsenic-contaminated water, posing serious hazards to Lahorits, who drink the water. The CJ summoned the managing director water and sanitation agency (Wasa) in the court for June 29 with complete record and a report on the water of tube wells. On Tuesday, in compliance of suo moto notice, MD WASA Dr Javed Akram appeared before the court. Additional Advocate General (AAG) Hanif Khatana, after taking instructions from the MD Wasa, told the court the information about the suo moto was received late night by the Wasa managing director and thus the report could not be prepared for submitting the same in the court. The additional advocate general pleaded the news/report on the basis of which the suo moto was taken was not authentic so it should not be relied much in the case. The CJ observed it would be decided after Wasa will submit its report whether its water contained arsenic or not. The AAG sought time on behalf of the WASA MD to prepare the report and the CJ allowed time till July 6. In the suo moto notice the CJ observed, 'Water is obviously a vital necessity of human being, the impurity of which is great threat to people the City especially the less-privileged ones who can not afford bottled water. The courts are alive to the situation to see whether potable water is being supplied to the masses or not, the CJ observed. Addict found dead A 60-year-old unidentified drug addict died under mysterious circumstances in Factory Area police precincts on Tuesday. Police investigators said that the deceased, yet to be identified, was an addict and died due to excessive consumption of drugs. As per details, some locals of the area spotted the body lying beside the main gate of the Lahore General Hospital and informed the police about it. Police after recovering the body made numerous announcements from the nearby mosques, but none of the citizens claimed to own the body. Later, police shifted the body to the city morgue for autopsy. Meanwhile, a 55-year-old vagabond was found dead in the limits of the Lohari Gate police. Police said the deceased, yet to be identified, was a beggar and was often seen in the said locality. Locals of the area spotted the body lying beside the wall of the Muslim Mosque Lohari Gate and informed the police, which reached the spot and removed the body to city mortuary for autopsy.
