Clearing the mess

PPP seems to be fulfilling its promise of bringing about constitutional changes. It is about to restore the powers of judiciary, as the headlines in today's newspapers suggest. An amendment is needed to clear out the mess inducted in the Constitution of Pakistan since 1999 including two PCOs promulgated by Gen (Retd) Pervez Musharraf. Judiciary and other institutions of the state should be made strong and workable checks and balances should be enacted. This is the only way to ensure democracy and rule of law in the country. Hopefully this new amendment will sort the issues between the presidency and the parliament once and for all and will fix the role of every institution of the state. This is perhaps the last chance for democracy in Pakistan and the political parties should to not ruin it with hasty decisions. -A PROUD PAKISTANI, Islamabad, via e-mail, May 21.
