Khayaban-e-Iqbal (Margalla Road) is a major avenue of Islamabad. It stretches from sector F-10 where there is no red light and which is used for car-racing by youngsters. High-speed racing also takes place on the stretch of Margalla road that runs along the F-9 Park. There have been times when I have seen cars overtaking me at breakneck speed from both sides simultaneously, i.e. one driving in the right lane and the other driving on the road shoulder. Needless to say that the shoulder is not broad enough for high speed overtaking. Some of these cars have fancy Islamabad number plates such as PA-100 and PC-100 and are driven by youngsters who are extremely rude and aggressive if one tries to stop them from their sport. While it is difficult to check such practices on round the clock basis, one solution may be to install small obstructions on the road shoulder such as cat's-eyes as they would make high speed driving impossible. -SHABBIR AHMAD, Islamabad, via e-mail, July 28.
