In Pakistan, the media is growing tremendously. Pakistan is one of the developing countries and has been a victim of poverty for many years. According to a research, poverty in Pakistan has jumped from 23.9% to 37.5% in last three years. Despite this, the concept of cable is penetrating all over the country. Our youngsters, who are the future of Pakistan are wasting their energy in front of the televisions, as they dont have other outlets for entertainment or leisure facilities. Media plays an important role in influencing the minds of young individuals. The major role, in this field is played by the various Indian channels, especially the Sitara Wala Channel (Star Plua), which is very famous for its thrilling dramas and is being followed by many Pakistanis. But have we ever analysed the negative impact of it on all of us especially on the innocent minds of our children. The impact and influence of these kinds of channels is so strong, but still we are not noticing it, in fact, ignoring it. There is a group on a famous social networking site named, I hate Star Plus. There are 56,000 fans of this group. After surveying this group, I came to know the reasons for which the people are against it. Few very important reasons are discussed below. The first and most important reason is the change in culture. We are adopting Indian culture in all possible ways. Women of our society, after being attracted by the expensive clothes, waste their money on these materialistic things. Saree, which is being worn by many women is actually not our cultural dress at all. It has been adopted by us from the Indian society. And is the result of social connections, the two countries shared in the past. The subject of these dramas is family politics. They are based on family problems, which includes, 'Saas-Bahu conflicts, murder, illegitimate relations, etc. And now these family politics has penetrated in our families too. These dramas are actually a political strategy to impose Indian culture on us. And the women of our society were the first victim of this strategy. From 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. the women of our society watch these dramas and ignore their responsibilities, which has become the source of disturbance in domestic and family environment. Former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi once said that India would conquer Pakistan not through war but through media. Now the reality is not different from this statement because the use of Hindi vocabulary in Urdu is diminishing our national identity. It is not hidden from us and we should not forget that the partition of subcontinent was based on the differences of the cultural, religious and social values between the two nations. We demanded Pakistan, not to practice Indian culture but to lead our lives according to the principles of Islam. From all these points we realize that 'Star Plus is actually working as a soft power. Television, which is an important source of communication and information, is being used as a diabolic weapon to destroy our social values. In order to safeguard our national and religious identity, the Government of Pakistan should restrict the broadcasting of such channels. YUMNA ANSARI, Islamabad, November 12.
