Serve us, serve yourself

I want to draw the attention of the PM, his Minister for Railways and Chairman Railways towards plight of the passengers on the Multan-Rawalpindi route. Only two Express trains, Mehr and Bilal, are being run on this section. The number of coaches attached with these trains are insufficient for meeting the heavy load of passengers on this route, especially on holidays like Eid. No 'sleepers' or lower-AC coaches are provided with these trains. Many employees and workers of the Chashma Power Plant and other factories on this section prefer to travel by these two trains to their hometowns on Multan-Kundian-Khanqah Sirajia section because no air-conditioned coach service is available on this route. There is no other reliable road transport on this section either. With such a lucrative route available, one fails to understand why the authorities of Pakistan Railways do not fill the gap here by initiating a separate rail car service from Multan to Chashma. It would not only generate a lot of revenues for the cash-strapped Railways but also serve the people of this region. -SABA GUL, Islamabad, December 12.
