Disaster management a disaster itself

While visiting the cyclone-hit areas of Sindh and Balochistan, whatever little work one sees is the knee-jerk response of a few national and international NGOs. The government-funded Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS), even in this hour of dire need and in its aftermath, had been conspicuous by its absence from Sindh and Balochistan. It is so laggard and lousy in the work so important to survival of the most needy that one gravely feels the need for its total re-organisation. Revitalization and re-invigoration of other such organizations such as the National Volunteers Movement (NVM) under the Ministry of Youth Affairs is also vital as it has become almost invisible nowadays. I appeal to the President/PM to appoint dynamic, easily accessible and public-spirited people to these organisations as has been done in the case of Pakistan Baitul Mal (PBM) or the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP). -HASHIM ABRO, Islamabad, June 17
