PM should assert now

CJ Iftikhar Ch and his colleagues have been reinstated and a beleaguered PPP has heaved a sigh of relief. One wonders how long would that last. The whole crisis was of their own making. It has weakened Mr Zardari's position in the party and most certainly in the country. Internationally he may still be preferred due to his other weaknesses. It goes without saying that one man was responsible for bringing the nation to such an impasse. It has once again reaffirmed our worst fears about Mr. Zardari. He is both erratic and indecisive. His total reliance on Rehman Malik ahead of PM strengthens this belief. The days ahead may not be very comforting for President and the Adviser on Interior, primarily due to their conniving nature. The PM should derive strength and restore his status as the chief executive of the country. He needs to balance out his loyalty between an individual and his country. He should remove all impediments in the execution of his duties through parliament by adopting the procedure laid down in the constitution. As a first step in this direction he needs to place a sensible political person as incharge of the Interior Ministry. Judiciary's dignity has hopefully been restored. It is now time for the Parliament and the PM to restore their dignity. -KHURAM KHAN, Lahore, via e-mail, March 16.
