Status of higher education

The deplorable low level of higher education in Pakistan with a historical perspective of past 63 years is that we with a 2.5% population of world have produced only 8800 Ph.Ds in the past ever since our independence, while Brazil with 2.7% population of world produces ten thousand Ph.Ds in a year at present. It is a shame that Pakistan is producing only one thousand Ph.Ds in a year at present even with the escalated effort of H.E.C. and our Universities. The productive capacity of Brazil only matches with its higher level of education in competing successfully with export markets in the world regarding poultry, sugar and soybean with U.S.A. and China. We in Pakistan, are witnessing a depression in funding for higher education with reduction of scholarships for Ph.Ds in foreign lands which is discouraging. The vigorous efforts of Dr. Ata-ur-Rehman in pushing higher education have been impeded by his removal as Chairman of H.E.C. with a severe setback to the cause of higher education in the country. DR. MUHAMMAD YAQOOB BHATTI, Lahore, January 19.
