ISLAMABAD Pakistans first web TV, Maati.tv was launched on Monday with the commitment to give youth a forum that can allow them to share their views on all social issues. Showing a video clip from the web tv programmes on sexual harassment, Mohammad Waseem, CEO of Interactive Resource Centre (IRC) and the pioneer of this web channel said, Our youth is intelligent enough to make sense of things if we give them opportunities to understand and contribute to the society more productively. He was speaking at the launching ceremony of several innovative options for young Pakistanis to clean up their society from the menace of sexual harassment. The chief guest at the event was Chairperson Law and Justice Committee, Begum Nasim Akhtar Ch. Other special guests were Vice Chancellor Karakoram International University, Gilgit-Baltistan Dr Najma Najam, Vice Chancellor Fatima Jinnah Women University Rawalpindi Pro Dr Saeeda Asadullah Khan and Executive Director IRC Muhammad Waseem. The event was also attended by academia, professors and students of different universities and civil society organisations. At the occasion Mehergarh (an institute which works mainly for youth) launched a research booklet, which is based on the case studies of students experiencing sexual harassment in educational institutions. In this research booklet several moving stories of women students were documented from all over the country. Dr Fouzia Saeed the author of this research wrote in the booklet, The purpose of this study was to have a quick sense of the level and kind of harassment that is going on in the educational institutions in Pakistan. Muhammad Waseem, from IRC said, Maati.tv is the need of the hour because in todays media-savvy world, it has become necessary to give a voice to the voiceless and the oppressed - and Maati.tv will aim to do exactly that. He said, Maati.tv will mainly serve as a platform for the youth to share their stories of social and development sectors. Higher Education Commission (HEC) also launched its policy guidelines against sexual harassment in institutions of higher learning at this event. The commission has been working on a draft policy for several months under a task force chaired by Najma Najam, VC Karakuram University. This policy was finalised in light of the recent legislation and sent to all the universities on February 1, 2011 to comply with.
