Murder accused killed in police custody

LAHORE A murder accused was killed and his brother, who was also his accomplice, wounded when two unidentified gunmen, riding a bike, opened fire on a private car by which they had been brought to the Shahdara DSPs office on Tuesday. Interestingly, no police escort was killed or injured in the incident. The victim was identified as 26-year-old Muhammad Waqas and his injured accomplice, Muhammad Fahad, 25, both residents of Faizpur. According to details, Waqas and Fahad were being taken back to the Shahdara Factory Area Police Station in a private car (IDH-208) by a sub-Inspector, Rab Nawaz, along with a constable after a meeting with the DSP at his office located inside the courts near Shahdara when two unidentified criminals attacked them near Jia Musa. An eyewitness said the armed men sprayed the two accused persons with a volley of bullets. They both received multiple bullets. But Waqas died while being ferried to a hospital while the condition of Fahad was stated to be out of danger. The dead body was shifted to a morgue for autopsy. According to the witness, the sub-inspector was driving the car, whereas, the constable was sitting in the back seat together with the two accused. Soon after the incident, a team from the Shahdara Police Station reached the spot. The eyewitness claimed that the sub-inspector, while pointing at a boy, told the police team that he had involvement in the armed attack. The boy was taken him into custody immediately. Police officials said that Waqas and his accomplice had been charged with a murder under Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code. No case was lodged until the filing of this report.
