Peshawar- Police registered an FIR today in Dera Ismail khan against those who released the chemical waste which killed ten people, including five members of a family.
Seven people including the owner of the mills were charged in the FIR. Six officials of the Chasma Sugar Mills-2 were arrested. The owner, according to police, has escaped. The funeral of the deceased has been held. Their families blocked the Indus Highway near Ranak to protest against the incident.
Khyber Pakthunkhwa Chief Minister Pervaiz Khatak, took notice of the incident yesterday. He said that those responsible will be held accountable.
The water channel, usually crossed on foot, is less than two feet deep and mainly carries waste from the mill. Most of the people cross this it in the Paloon area of Ramak on a daily basis.
"Most of them died from suffocation. Because chemical wastes caused a shortage of oxygen,” said Dr Jehangir, a local who runs a clinic in the area. “ When people were passing thorough this water channel they fell unconscious and died," he said. He added that about eight people were referred to the Tehsil Headquarters Hospital Purwa as there was no clinic in the village to treat them.
