Sectarian killings grip Karachi
MWM leader, three Tableeghi Jamaat members, four TTP men shot dead
 
 
 

KARACHI  - At least six people including a leader of Majlis-e-Wahdat-e-Muslimeen were gunned down in a spate of sectarian killings while four alleged associates of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan were shot dead in an assault in the provincial metropolis on Tuesday.
MWM’s deputy secretary general Maulana Deedar Ali Jalbani was on his way to his office located at Ancholi Society along with his security guard-cum-driver, Sarfaraz Ali, from his residence located in Ayub Goth when armed motorcyclists intercepted his car near NED University and sprayed bullets on them.
Both men sustained multiple bullet wounds and were rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where doctors pronounced them dead.
SHO Jamal Leghari said at least six armed men on three motorcycles attacked the MWM leader. “They (target killers) did their job with proper homework. They attacked the MWM leader after following them from his residence,” said Leghari. The officer said 9mm pistols were used in the attack and empty shells were also collected from the site, and added the incident was part of the ongoing sectarian killings in the metropolis.
Following the incident, tension gripped Shia-dominated areas including Ancholi Society, Rizvia Society, Ayub Goth, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Jaffer Tayar Society in Malir, MA Jinnah Road and Abbas Town where commercial and non commercial activities were suspended and enraged people staged protest against the killing.
Protesters shouted slogans and demanded stern action against the extremist defunct organisations. Extra troops including Rangers and police were deployed in affected areas to avoid any untoward incident. Massive traffic jam was also reported due to poor law and order situation in various localities.
Later, three members of a Tableeghi Jamaat were shot dead and two others were wounded in a separate targeted killing in North Nazimabad.
At least three armed riders on a motorcycle opened indiscriminate fire outside the Farooq-e-Azam Mosque located at North Nazimabad. SP Mohammad Akhtar said two deceased identified as Maulana Abdul Majeed, 60, and Omer Khattab, 50, had dual nationalities of Pakistan and Morocco while one deceased was identified as Salman, 18. The injured include Qari Hanif and an unidentified man. SP further said that 9mm pistols were used in attack and police had also collected 10 empty shells from the crime scene. The bodies and the injured were taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. On the other side, a local leader of Ahle-e-Sunnat Wal Jamaat known as Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan Moulana Ishaq Umar was wounded in an armed attack near Quaedabad Intersection. Police said Ishaq was on his way to home when gunmen targeted him and managed to flee. The wounded Maulana sustained bullet wounds and taken to hospital where doctors declared his condition critical.
Meanwhile, Majlis-e-Wahdat-e-Muslimeen has announced 3-day mourning and protest day to condemn the brutal assassination of Allama Deedar Jalbani and his guard in a terrorist attack.
Similarly, a scout of Payam-e-Wilayat was shot dead in an act of targeted killing near Singer Chowrangi in Sharafi Goth Police Station. The deceased, Syed Zakir Hussain, used to work at the garment factory and was waiting for transport when armed motorcyclists shot him dead.
Separately, four alleged associates of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan were gunned down in an armed assault with automatic rifles near Sarina Shopping Center in the limits of Shahrah-e-Noorjahan Police Station.
