ISLAMABAD – PML-N along with its newfound allies will march up to the offices of the Election Commission of Pakistan and stage a sit-in for empowerment of the ECP.
The march will be jointly led by PML-N Chairman Raja Zafarul Haq, Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Ch Nisar Ali Khan and leaders of the other parties attending the event, on the request of PML-N.
Jammat-i-Islami, PML-F, Sindh Awami Tehrik, a few other nationalist parties of Sindh, PML AJK and PPP of Sardar Khalid Ibrahim will join the sit-in. However, Jamiat-e-Ulema-e-Islam-F is annoyed with PML-N for not supporting their agitation against imposition of the governor’s rule in Balochistan. So Maulana Fazlur Rehman has decided to stay away from the PML-N sponsored sit-in.
Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Ch. Nisar Ali Khan has said during a press conference that his party will stage a sit-in outside the parliament for empowering the ECP as an independent election commission guarantees transparent elections. A meeting of the PML-N parliamentary party has been called at the Parliament House today (Monday) at 1pm at which the protest plan would be given final touches.
PML-N leaders said the main focus of their protest would be to ensure provision of maximum powers and autonomy to the Election Commission of Pakistan so that the next general elections could be held in a free, fair and transparent fashion. Similarly, the other object of the protest is to give moral strength to the ECP in conducting voters’ verification in Karachi on the directions of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
Sources in PML-N said Nisar has directed leaders and workers to participate in the protest. The MNAs from Rawalpindi and Islamabad, including Hanif Abbasi, Shakeel Awan, Malik Ibrar and Anjum Aqeel Khan, have been given special task by the party leadership to ensure maximum participation of workers in the sit-in.
