Altaf assures Zardari of continued support

KARACHI – MQM chief Altaf Hussain on Thursday assured President Asif Ali Zardari of continued support to the ruling PPP. Hussain, in his telephonic conversation with Zardari, dispelled his concerns about MQM’s support to Tahirul Qadri’s January 14 long march on Islamabad. Earlier on Tuesday, Rehman Malik held a meeting with the MQM chief in London over the Tehreek-e-Minhajul Quran chairman’s long march calling for a ‘change’. But Altaf advised the interior minister to leave for Lahore and take up the matter with Qadri. On Thursday, President Zardari somewhat succeeded in taking a pledge from the MQM chief of continued support to the ruling PPP. According to Farhatullah Babar, the presidential spokesperson, Hussain said, “The MQM will continue supporting the PPP-led Sindh and federal governments.” The MQM had announced to support and participate in Tahirul Qadri’s long march on Islamabad on January 14. This development forced the president to send Rehman Malik to London with a message from him.
