Govt to file appeal against FSC verdict on WPA, SC told

ISLAMABAD - The Shariat Appellate Bench of the Supreme Court was informed on Tuesday that the federal government would file an appeal against the Federal Shariat Courts December 21, 2010 judgment on the Women Protection Act (WPA) 2006. The bench comprised Justice Tariq Parvez, Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa, Justice Dr Fida Muhammad Khan and Justice Dr Muhammad Al-Ghazali heard the two petitions, filed by Executive Member of the Supreme Court Bar Association Aslam Ghumman and Women Action Forum. Appearing on courts notice, Attorney General for Pakistan Maulvi Anwar ul Haq informed the bench that the government was intended to challenge the FSC judgment against the WPA 2006 and it would file the petition very soon. He prayed the court to grant some time for filing the appeal against the FSC order. The court, while accepting the AGPs plea, adjourned the case for indefinite period. The same bench on April 27 had accepted the appeal, filed by SCBA Executive Member Aslam Ghuman against the FSC judgment on Women Protection Act 2006.
