Lahore - In a major political development on Tuesday, three major Opposition parties-the PPP, the PTI and JI- announced to form a political alliance against the ruling PML-N hardly three months after its coming into power.
The provincial leadership of the three parties met at Model Town residence of PPP’s Punjab President Mian Manzoor Ahmad Wattoo and had extensive deliberations on the current political situation.
The PTI team was led by former Foreign Minister Mian Khursheed Mahmood Kasuri and party’s provincial head Ejaz Ch. Ameerul Azim represented JI in the negotiations.
Mian Manzoor Wattoo, Tanvir Ashraf Kaira and Shaukat Basra participated in the discussion from the PPP side.
“We have agreed to launch a joint struggle to protect interests of the country and its people. To start with, the Opposition parties would contest the coming Local Bodies elections on a single platform and challenge the Local Government Bill in the court”, Manzoor Wattoo told a joint news conference at his residence accompanied by other Opposition leaders.
He also said that Opposition parties were going to challenge the LG law in the court because it provided for non-party based elections. “This is not acceptable to the Opposition as it is against the basic spirit of democracy”, remarked the PPP leader who was hopeful that they would get the desired relief from the judiciary.
“The decision to hold non-party based elections by a government which came into power through a democratic process, was indicative of the hidden fears in the minds of the rulers”, he observed, adding, that all Opposition parties have gathered on a single platform for continuity of democracy.
Khurshid Kasuri and Ejaz Ch said that last general elections were not transparent due to rigging by the PML-N. They said the decision to hold local polls on non-party basis was quite shocking.
“If justice is not done, we would quit the Assemblies and come out on the streets to give a tough time to the government”, said the PTI leaders.
Ameerul Azim of JI also endorsed the view point of the PPP and PTI leaders and assured them his party’s support and cooperation on all issues including the Local Bodies elections.
