Hafiz Saeed thumbs nose at US bounty

RAWALPINDI - Expressing confidence in the independent judiciary of Pakistan, Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) head Hafiz Saeed said he would knock the door of courts for justice if the federal govt tried to detain him at behest of the United States, which announced a bounty of $10m on him and US $2m on Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) chief Hafiz Abdul Rehman Makki.“I move freely here and there and even can be seen by everyone. Bounty is announced for those who go into hiding after committing any crime. I appeal America to award me $10 million and I would meet with them and also spend this money for the uplift of people of Balochistan,” he added. Hafiz expressed these views at a conference organised by DPC after a meeting of the council over post-US decision situation at a local hotel on Wednesday.Hafiz Saeed said he was ready to face ‘any American court’ to answer charges. “If the United States wants to contact me, I am present, they can contact me. I am also ready to face any American court, or wherever there is proof against me,” he told reporters. The meeting was also attended by DPC Chairman Maulana Sami-ul-Haq, former DG ISI Lt-Gen (r) Hamid Gul, Sheikh Rashid, Liaqat Baloch, Maulana Tahir Ashrafi and many others.Hafiz Saeed said he was available in Pakistan any time to talk to the US. Lamenting over the ignorance of US, he said there was no legal ground for initiating action against him and his aide Hafiz Abdul Rehman Makki as they were not wanted in any criminal act in the United States.Criticizing the silence of Pakistani Foreign Office, Hafiz said the DPC had written letters to the federal govt and the Parliament, adding that efforts were also underway to contact the US authorities in Islamabad to convey their concerns. He said he would move the court of law in Pakistan if the local authorities under the US pressure tried to detain him or hand him over to the Americans.Hafiz said he had already been exonerated by the SC  from the charges levelled against him by India s about his alleged involvement in the 2008 Mumbai attacks. “Now, I will only knock at the door of local judiciary, if needed” he added.DPC Chairman Sami-ul-Haq urged the federal government and Parliament to react sharply over the US move and  asked President Asif Ali Zardari to cancel his planned visit to India on April 8.  The DPC chairman said the Foreign Office should summon the US ambassador and lodge official protest over the issue. Maulana said the DPC would observe a black day on Friday in protest. Sami warned if US repeated any Abbottabad-like operation against Hafiz Saeed, the DPC would agitate across the country. He added that the US had been creating more enemies for its people by fulfilling the wishes of India.
