Election tribunal orders re-election in PP-97

Gujranwala- A local election tribunal today declared null and void the voting results in PP-97 and ordered reelection on 33 polling stations in the Punjab Assembly constituency won by ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s candidate in Gujranwala city of Punjab.

The tribunal issued its orders on a petition filed by PML-Q’s Hamid Chima who had challenged victory of PML-N’s Chaudhry Muhammad Ashraf Warraich, claiming vote rigging in the election.

After finding proofs of rigging, the tribunal finally invalidated voting results in PP-97 (Gujranwala-VII) and directed authorities to hold reelection on 33 polling stations.

The ruling party has been blamed by Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf for massive frauds in last year’s general elections in the former’s political hub of Punjab.

However, the Supreme Court and Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) are yet to investigate the matter which raises a question mark on transparency of votes in Punjab as well as other provinces.
