Rainwater inundates Peshawar slum areas

  PESHAWAR - Like other parts of the country heavy downpour baldy affected the routine life of the masses in Khyber Pakhtunkwha particularly Peshawar as water inundated slum areas and blocked vehicular traffic in the provincial metropolis. Due to overflowing of canals, water has entered areas like Zaryab Colony, Afghan Colony, Supply Road, Dilazak Road, Yousafabad, Rasheedabad, Madina Colony, Gulbahar Colony, Namak Mandi, Khyber Bazar, Qissa Khawani Bazar, Board Bazar and Rampora gate. The overflowing water has inundated roads, fields and houses in various areas of Peshawar. Long queues of vehicles were seen on both sides of Charsadda Road, Khyber road and main GT Road. Later in the day, people either returned or left their motorcars and bikes and crossed the water by walking. Residents of Landi Arbab said that rain water has also damaged their graveyards and houses. They said that the water has also damaged their telephone landlines and in some areas electricity was also disrupted. Some of the locals also criticized the town administration and municipal corporations staff for not coming on time to remove the house waste and garbage lying along canal and roads.The staff of town Municipal Corporation badly failed to control the situation as the lack of staff and blocking of various canals has diverted the water flow towards main roads, which caused traffic miseries. The residents of different localities like Nothia, Civil quarters, Swati Patak, and Gulbarg area contributed on self-help basis to remove the water barriers to ensure smooth flow of water for avoiding pool on roads and streets.Some of the staff of Town Municipal Corporation were also busy to cope with the situation but the continued rain further deteriorated the situation. There are also reports of casualties in parts of Peshawar including Khadra Khail, Khanzana, Mattni, Palosi and Hayatabad areas. Most of the slum areas facing severe threats of roof collapse and they have vacated their houses.There are also reports of casualties in Palosi, Mattni and Hayatabad areas where several houses have been damaged as a result of heavy rains.     In other incidents, a child died and 15 others got injured critically in separate incidents of house collapse in the city. The first incident occurred in Mattni area when a wall of a house collapsed on a minor child. The deceased identified as Imran along with his brother Kamran, sons of Hazrat Mohammad, were playing in their house when the dilapidated wall fell on them. The locals rushed to the site and removed the debris and shifted the injured to Lady Reading Hospital where Imran succumbed to his injuries. In the second incident, the wall of a house also collapsed in Sra Khawra area of Kohat Road injuring as many as 10 persons.Other parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa like Charsadda, Nowshera, Mardan, Swabi, Swat, Dir, Chitral and Buner also received heavy rain which intensified chilly weather while snowfall has been started in upper areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Northern Areas. According to the Met Office forecast, more rains are expected today. Though the heavy downpour will have positive impacts on major crops of the current season like wheat while the crop of sugarcane and its crushing process is badly affected.An official of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa metrological department informed TheNation that 3.5 feet snowfall recorded in Malam Jaba, 2.0 feet in Kalam, one feet in Dorosh, 08 inch in Dir, 07 inch in Muree, 06 inch in Chitral, and five inch in Skardu.
