MULTAN - A designing flaw in the structure of newly-constructed bridge of Chenab River near Multan has so far taken the lives of at least six youngsters and the citizens fear that the number of victims will continue to rise in future if immediate steps are not taken to remove the fault. There is a wide open gap between the dividers of both sides of the bridge and six youngsters have so far fallen in the river from this gap. Despite the fact that none of the youngsters could be recovered alive from the river, the National Highway Authority (NHA) has not taken any step to address this issue so far. The increase in ratio of this kind of accidents is alarming and the citizens fear that the killer gap can kill more youngsters in the future. The NHA sources said that the one-km long gap between the both sides of the bridge took place because of poor designing but no step was taken to eliminate this technical fault. Sources said that the youngsters, who fell into the river, attempted to jump over the divider and lost their lives while showing their stunt. Meanwhile, the social circles of Multan and Muzaffargarh have demanded Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani to direct NHA officials to make arrangements for covering the gap immediately. It may not be out of place to mention here that the prime minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani had conferred gold medal on the contractor of Chenab River bridge project on completion of its construction, although media reported a number of irregularities and flaws during construction period.
