Bid to smuggle precious birds foiled

Our staff reporter LAKKI MARWAT A team of Wildlife Department arrested a birds smuggler and seized over two dozen precious birds from him in Naurang town, claimed an official on Saturday. The official said that Divisional Forest Officer Wildlife Bannu Division Khan Malook was informed about a possible smuggling of black, brown and red-legged partridges and other precious birds from Naurang area. On getting information a special team headed by range officer wildlife Lakki Abdul Rehman was formed to foil the birds smuggling bid, the official said. He said that the wildlife officials arrested a man identified as Muhammad Rafiq, a resident of Bannu and recovered 28 birds from his possession. A case was registered against the smuggler under section of Wildlife Act, he added. Meanwhile, police claimed to have arrested two outlaws including a female proclaimed absconder in Tajori and Naurang localities of the district. Acting on a tip-off, a police party carried out a surprise raid on the hideout of criminals in Tajori area and arrested a dreaded offender Ihsanullah Bettanni, said an official source on Saturday. The source said that the arrested criminal was wanted by police in several cases of murder, attempted murder and attack on police party, he maintained. In a separate operation, he said, a female proclaimed absconder wanted by police in a theft case was arrested in Naurang. She was identified as Nighat Afzal, a resident of Lahore, he told. Separately, Serai Gambila police foiled a cattle smuggling bid and arrested four people along with animals. A police party led by ASI Abdul Saboor recovered four cows from a pickup on Third Canal road leading to the frontier tribal region, the source told, saying that the cows were being transported to the tribal area illegally. He said that police arrested the cattle smugglers including Muhammad Noor, Wali Dad, Abdul Majid and Shafiqullah and registered a case against them.
