PESHAWAR - The halt to drone strikes within the geographical territory of Pakistan completes 100 days on Sunday, as no drone attack has been conducted in Pakistan since 26, 2013.
According to available data with The Nation, the US spy planes continued showering missiles in Pakistan’s tribal and settled areas for around nine years, nine months and 17 days, killing a total of 3,000 persons including al-Qaeda and Taliban commanders and innocent civilians.
The federal government claims that halt in drone strikes is the outcome of their constants diplomatic efforts; however, it is not yet clear why the drone strikes have been stopped. The people in tribal areas were of the opinion that halt in drone strike during the government-Taliban talks confirmed their suspicion that the drone attacks had the approval of the government.
The second last drone attack on tribal area damaged the dialogue process, as it killed Taliban leader Hakeemullah Mehsood and resultantly the dialogue process was suspended.
